WHAT IS ELECTROFORMING?
Hand-fabricated in an intricate process of fusing copper onto other surfaces with low voltage electricity, each piece is unique. The scientific process of electroforming involves coating an organic subject in conductive paint. The piece is suspended in a solution comprised of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid. The electrical charge breaks down a positively charge copper anode and deposits it onto the piece, which is suspended from the negatively charged cathode. A layer of copper slowly forms over the piece. After 24+ hours of moving copper ions onto the organic piece, it is removed from the bath, neutralized, and goes on to the polish and patina processes. The piece is hardy and durable, while the original organic material is encased in the copper.
WHY COPPER?
When I first saw electroformed pieces, I was obsessed. Something about copper, such an underrated metal, being used to make such beautiful pieces of art was inspiring. I just had to see what all I could do with it.
Also, copper is man’s oldest metal. It dates back more than 10,000 years and is known as the “healing metal” because of suggestions that it has healing properties, including relief of headaches, arthritis, and joint pain. Metaphysically, copper stimulates the flow of energy, intuition, and self-esteem. Any stone with copper around it is said to have enhanced properties.
IS IT STILL IN THERE?
I often work with organic subjects such as flowers, leaves, bones, and even insects. (Ethically-sourced. Always.) During the electroforming process, the copper is "grown" onto the subject, permanently encasing it. So yes, it is still inside!
DO YOU TAKE CUSTOM ORDERS?
Yes! Several times a year, I will open myself up to taking custom orders. I do not, however, take custom orders using your personal subjects. Following my social media - links below - is the best way to stay up-to-date on custom order availability.
WILL MY COPPER STAY SHINY?
Many of my pieces are finished with a dark patina and are low maintenance. If you own a bright copper piece of jewelry, over time, you may notice the copper tarnishing or oxidizing. You can easily restore your copper with the polishing cloth you receive with your order. (Extra cloths are available to purchase.) I do not suggest polishing pieces that have an intentional patina, as you risk removing it or causing an undesired effect.
WILL IT TURN MY SKIN GREEN?
While it is not guaranteed, copper can leave a green ring on your skin that is easily washed off with soap and water. (This is common with rings and bracelets, but is unlikely with pendants.) This is a completely natural and harmless effect of copper and can actually tell you something about your body. Copper reacts naturally with our salty skin, which can be created when we sweat. Copper can also react to acidic environments, and your body's acidity is related to your diet. Processed foods or a diet consisting of a lot of red meat can make your body acidic, and can cause more of a reaction with the copper and your skin.
If you would prefer to prevent the green skin, you can add a coat of clear nail polish to the copper that is in contact with your skin. Please note, if you do this, it will wear down over time and need reapplied, you are no longer receiving the benefits of the natural copper, and I am not responsible for any changes you make to your jewelry.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY COPPER JEWELRY?
• Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place.
• Remove your jewelry before sleeping, showering, and swimming.
• Avoid your jewelry coming into direct contact with chemicals such as hand sanitizer, lotion, perfume, and makeup. If your jewelry does come into contact, wipe it clean with a soft, dry cloth.
